Overview
The following modules were developed to aid clinicians, students, and others in working with species of the fungus-like organism Pythium. While working with these organisms for many years, I have learned two important lessons: 1) there is a lot that we don't know about Pythium, and 2) when I start to think that I know a lot about Pythium, I realize that I don't know much! There is always something new or different that presents itself in working with these highly variable, living organisms. That makes them frustrating in a fun sort of way!
The information presented here has been gained through experience, frequent observation, making mistakes, correcting mistakes, and learning by doing. Pythium is the ultimate instructor. Keep good records of what you do as you work with Pythium because as you gain experience, you will refute some of what is presented below or improve on it. Pass that knowledge on to others... please.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Define what Pythium is
- Differentiate Pythium from other fungi and fungus-like organisms
- Explain the biology of Pythium and the diseases it causes
