Nematode Diagnostics Lab

The Penn State Nematode Diagnostics Lab provides diagnostic support against economically important plan-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) from soil and plant materials as a service for growers, private persons, and other stakeholders. Our goal is to provide a quick and accurate identification of PPNs to genera level and counts (if requested). Nematode identifications and counts are based primarily on morphological analyses.

Our lab is not currently offering molecular analyses.

The price varies depending on the service requested. For plant leaf nematode ID service (including Beech Leaf Disease) the price is $13.33/sample and $18.38 if it includes ID and nematode counts. For soil samples, the ID service for nematode identification at the species level is $29.34/sample and $47.89 if nematodes counts are requested. Discounts are offered if submitting 4+ samples (more information provided on the Nematode Diagnostic Lab Check Sheet.)

Collect diagnostic samples throughout the growing season from areas of poor growth or nutrient or water stress symptoms in fields where nematodes are suspected to be a problem. If submitting soil samples, collect them 6-8 inches deep in the root zone adjacent to affected plants. Submit at least 1 pint of soil for the test, in a ziplock bag if soil bags are not available. Samples cannot be received on weekends; please ship accordingly. Soil should be kept cool until mailed or delivered in-person to the Nematode Diagnostic Lab. A Nematode Diagnostic Lab Check Sheet is required for processing.

Results

The results of the assay and management recommendations will be returned to you through the contact email provided on the Nematode Diagnostic Lab Check Sheet within 4-5 days after receipt of samples.
