My research focuses on determining the bacterial species associated with potato blackleg and soft rot disease in Pennsylvania potatoes. To do this, I'm using a culture-based method to collect isolates from symptomatic potatoes and using whole genome sequencing to identify isolates to the species level. I'll be taking a shotgun metagenomics approach to further evaluate the variety of species associated with disease.
Beyond the lab, I'm interested in exploring how we can better integrate our science knowledge to meet our agricultural policy goals in an effort to strengthen our food system and minimize our environmental footprint.
