On May 5 the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute awarded Drs. Terrence Bell and Mary Ann Bruns (Ecosystem Science and Management) metatranscriptomic sequencing from the Small-scale Microbial/Metagenome Program.

Bell and Bruns will use the sequencing to compare the activity of a soil surface consortium in the presence or absence of underlying soil microbiomes, under various nitrogen and light conditions. Their project is titled "How interactions with soil microbiomes impact the survival and activity of a nitrogen-fixing soil surface consortium."
