UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Jamie Spychalla, a plant pathology graduate student in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, recently received a scholarship from the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV).
The ASEV scholarship supports academic pursuit in enology and viticulture. ASEV selected 28 students throughout the U.S. and Canada this year, including three students at Penn State.
Spychalla is advised by Sharifa Crandall, assistant professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology.
“This award will open new doors for Jamie to connect with grape growers and conduct bleeding-edge research on grape pathology,” said Crandall.
Spychalla’s current research focuses on sour rot on grapes, a disease complex that involves yeasts, acetic acid bacteria and insect vectors. Her work also involves studying biotic and abiotic factors that influence disease progression, as well as studying management strategies to help vineyard managers efficiently control this rot.
