Experts in mushroom disease in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences have produced a series of factsheets to educate industry professionals on mushroom disorders.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Experts in mushroom disease in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences have produced a series of factsheets to educate industry professionals on mushroom disorders. 

The factsheets, created by experts in Penn State Extension and the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, are available in Spanish and English. They are designed for use by mushroom farm employees, who are often the first to detect a new occurrence of a mushroom disease.

The full-color fact sheets are categorized by the pathogens causing the disease and the affected mushroom part to facilitate ease of use in the field. They include “Syzygites Disease on the Agaricus Mushroom,” “What is Integrated Pest Management? IPM for Mushroom Farms,” “Bacterial and Viral Diseases of Mushrooms,” and “Mushroom Fungal diseases.”

The free fact sheets are available for download at at extension.psu.edu. Production of a limited number of print copies was made possible by an Organic Research and Extension Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Project leaders include Maria Gorgo, horticulture extension educator, David Beyer, professor of mushrooms, and John Pecchia, director of Penn State’s Mushroom Research Center. The team hopes to publish additional copies in the future.
