UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –  Caylon Yates, a graduate student in the Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and in the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, has been selected as a recipient for the 2020-21 British Ecological Society award.

The British Ecological Society (BES) research grants provide funding for new and innovative research where there is a clear ecological science focus to the work.

He submitted his project, titled “Species-specific soil modification by ectomycorrhizal fungi,” after virtually attending last year’s BES conference. This work will examine how functional traits of ectomycorrhizal fungi may be useful in predicting the properties and functioning of soil microbiomes.

Yates is advised by Terrence Bell, assistant professor of phytobiomes in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology.
