UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The scholarship was established by Rose Hellaby with the Māori Education Fund and the Perpetual Guardian Trust to encourage Māori students (Indigenous to New Zealand) to expand their horizons in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by pursuing higher education to reach their full potential. The scholarship recognizes Ehau-Taumaunu's academic excellence and her leadership potential.

"It is a great honor for my whānau (family) and I to receive the support of a prestigious and highly competitive scholarship such as the Rose Hellaby Scholarship," said Ehau-Taumaunu. "I hope to reciprocate this assistance in the future on my return to New Zealand by following research questions that will benefit my whanau, iwi (tribes), and the wider community and hopefully add to the lineage of Māori scientists as a mentor and advisor."
