The workshop was organized by Dr. Maria del Mar Jimenez-Gasco, and delivered by Dr. Carolee Bull (Research plant pathologist, USDA/ARS, Salinas, CA). This is one of three workshops from the award-winning mentoring curriculum developed by Dr. Bull. Although the workshop was largely targeted to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, several faculty and staff also participated.

In the workshop we discussed how to define and teach yourself the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in your career. The workshop was divided into four parts:

Part 1: Goal definition and development of a personal mission statement

Part 2: Understanding how and on what you are evaluated

Part 3: Making an honest self –evaluation

Part 4: Defining ways to get or demonstrate the skills that you have marked for improvement

Dr. Bull will follow up with workshop attendees wanting to benchmark progress.
