Posted: June 9, 2014

A USDA travel award from the Oomycete Molecular Genetics Research Collaboration Network enabled Carla to attend this workshop, held on June 3rd-5th. The workshop featured presentations on methods of genome sequencing and gene prediction and centered on teaching the attendees how to utilize the web tools FungiDB and Pathogen Portal to analyze genomic data.

Topics covered in the workshop included: finding genes and synteny sets, discovering protein domains, finding protein and DNA motifs, analyzing RNAseq and transcriptomics data sets, discovering how a gene is involved in a metabolic pathway, quickly accessing and comparing data from isolates, elucidating orthology and gene phylogeny, identifying genome colocalization, and analyzing SNP datasets. One of the instructors for the workshop was Dr. Venkatesh Moktali, recent Penn State graduate of the Bioinformatics and Genomics program advised by Dr. Seogchan Kang!
