Abstract: In this lecture, Dr. Micallef will discuss using tomato fruit and lettuce associating with Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 as food safety model systems, to profile plant metabolites, including sugars, organic acids and phenolics, to evaluate the plant metabolite response to pathogens and the reciprocal bacterial growth effects.

Bio: Dr. Shirley Micallef is a Professor in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland, where she also holds a joint appointment with the Center for Food Safety and Security Systems. A microbial ecologist with a background in plant science, Dr Micallef has been researching how enteric pathogens that compromise food safety interact with plants, both under controlled conditions and in field studies. Her research also addressing how agricultural practices and environmental conditions affect crop microbiomes, and explores the potential for plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria to bolster plant resilience to abiotic stress and enteric pathogen-plant associations.
