Abstract: Emerging technologies such as AI, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have great potential to be used for pest management practices in tree fruit orchards. In this seminar, Dr. Long He will introduce a few related projects from his research program and discuss the implementation of these technologies for orchard pest management. These examples include sensing and deep learning models for crop canopy monitoring and health situations identification; precision and robotic spraying systems for tree fruit orchards pest management to reduce chemical usage and minimize human involvement; using an IoT network system with microclimate measurement to enhance data-driven decision support for orchard pest management.

Bio: Dr. Long He is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Penn State. He joined Penn State in January 2018 and is physically located at Penn State Fruit Research and Extension Center (FREC) in Biglerville, PA. His research focuses on emerging agricultural technologies for specialty crop production, such as precision agriculture, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
