On March 30 the College of Agricultural Sciences Gamma Sigma Delta chapter presented the Extension Excellence award to Dr. David M. Beyer. The ceremony was preceded by a reception in the Forest Resources Building atrium. Dr. Beyer was introduced at the ceremony by Dept. of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology (PPEM) Dept. Head Dr. Carolee Bull. Gamma Sigma Delta President Dr. Beth Gugino presided.

David Meigs Beyer received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the then-Department of Plant Pathology at Penn State University after earning his B.S. degree from Syracuse University. His expertise is also derived from twelve years as Farm Manager and Director of Growing for the largest mushroom-growing facility in Canada. Beyer's research and extension contributions help to ensure the premier status of the Penn State Mushroom Program. His research and practical experience have made David a sought-after international speaker. Since 1997 he has served the industry and scientific colleagues as Chair of the world-renowned Mushroom Short Course and regularly chairs and leads other workshops. Although David does not have a teaching appointment, he has mentored three Ph.D. students and two M.S. students with federal and other grants to support them. He has served on the sixteen committees for graduate degree candidates, including those of current faculty members in PPEM and in Special Education.
