McNellis Lab and Alumni News in 2016

Dr. Tim McNellis's former advisees Drs. Steven Lee, Tzuu-fen Lee, and Dharmendra Singh all accepted new, permanent positions in 2016:
- Steve Lee (Ph.D., 2012, Plant Pathology) became a research molecular biologist at the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Parlier, California, in February;
- In August DuPont Pioneer in Johnston, Iowa, hired Tzuu-fen Lee (Ph.D., 2008, Plant Biology) as a research scientist (Genome Edited Trait Discovery);
- Dharmendra Singh (Ph.D., 2011, Plant Biology) begins this month as Plant Pathology Project Manager at H.M. Clause, Inc., the second-largest vegetable seed distributor worldwide, in Davis, California.
Current Ph.D. candidate and advisee Ms. Sara Klee was selected to present her research on fire blight bacterial genetics as part of the Melhus Graduate Student Symposium at the annual meeting of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) in Tampa, Florida, in August.
Tim was the principal investigator (PI) of a successful proposal submitted to the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Undergraduate Research and Extension Experiential Learning Fellowship Program. The first cohort of five students, from Penn State as well as five minority-serving institutions, began the research program in residence at University Park in June–August. They continue the research at their home institutions in collaboration with Penn State faculty and faculty mentors at their home institutions. Penn State co-PI faculty involved in this project come from a range of departments, including Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, Entomology, Chemical Engineering, and Plant Science.
