Dr. Dilantha Fernando Visits PPEM

On Dec. 5-6, 2016, Dr. W. G. Dilantha Fernando, University of Manitoba, gave two seminars for PPEM related to wheat and canola.

Dr. W. G. Dilantha Fernando, Professor in the Dept. of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, visited the Dept. of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology (PPEM) on Dec. 5-6, 2016. He delivered two seminars titled “The war of the Titans: lessons learned from the continuous battle between wheat and Fusarium” and “Do genes hijack, play hide-and-seek, and go hitchhiking?: lessons from the canola-blackleg playbook.” Dr. Fernando met with many faculty and students and toured the Mushroom Research Center.

Dr. Fernando earned his Ph.D. in plant pathology at Oregon State University. Currently Vice-President of the Canadian Phytopathological Society (CPS), Dr. Fernando will serve as CPS president in 2018. His research and extension work serves the important wheat and canola industry in Manitoba as well as other provinces in Canada. He is the recipient of numerous awards for research, teaching, and outreach.
