Online Networks Provide Science-Based Information to Solve Global Plant Disease Problems via Crowdsourcing
A series of websites were developed by Seogchan Kang and colleagues to aid in the identification of members of fungal genera that include plant pathogens. The websites provide keys to identification, platforms for comparative genomics, and platforms for sharing emerging information about the genera of interest. The Phytophthora Database and Cyberinfrastructure for Fusarium have been accessed ~1,300 times each per month on average. Both platforms have been updated to increase their cyber-security. VertShield, an online resource that supports Verticillium research and species identification, was publicly released in 2015.
