Program Content

Spend the day with plant doctors and microbiologists who study the microscopic beings which live everywhere. Participants will move from station to station to see the amazing world of microbes and what they do. At one station bacteria produce antibiotics that inhibit plant pathogens. Because plants get sick too and they need plant doctors, participants will tour the plant emergency room at Penn State and work with plant doctors to find out which fungi, viruses, or bacteria are killing the sick plant patients. Participants will use microscopes to look at microbes from the environment and write their own name with glow-in-the-dark bacteria. Participants will learn how viruses make tulips even more beautiful. At the mushroom station participants will learn how to grow edible mushrooms, play Find the Fungus, and make mushroom art prints which they can take home.

Watch Can We Live in a World Without Microbes? to learn more about the amazing world of microbes and to get ready for a day with the plant doctors!

This event is open to anyone interested.

This is a non-competitive event, so participant ribbons will be presented to participants.
